Older Homes – Is one in your future?
Not only are the baby boomers entering the Social Security program at an astonishing rate, but, a new survey shows that the average age of owner occupied homes in the United States is also increasing.
The US Department of Housing and Urban Developments, American Housing Survey found that the median age of an owner-occupied home in the United States was 35 years old in 2011, up from a median home age of 23 in 1985.
It would seem that more than 40% of owner occupied homes in the United States were built before 1969. Actually, homes built from 2000 through 2009 just account for 15% of the owner-occupied housing in the country.
The survey concluded with the fact that this aging in the median age of homes in the US could prove to be a boon for the home remodeling businesses. The older homes in the country tend to be less energy-efficient than newer homes and generally need more repairs.
