Perpetual Unemployment Benefits Doing More Harm Than Good
Next week legislation to extend expanded unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed through the end of the year looks like it will be passed in Washington.
In nearly half of the states the jobless can collect unemployment checks for 79 weeks. The new federal government extension would lengthen the time span up to 99 weeks. That’s almost two years of individuals collecting money for not working. If you’re fine with this because you feel sorry for those who don’t have jobs, then how about three years? Four years? Should there even be a limit?
Finally, some are saying that the seeming endless unemployment checks are actually a detriment to motivating people to get back to work … What do you think?

I don’t think that people should be able to collect unemployment! While some of us are breaking our backs to keep our jobs, other people are just collecting on our tax dollars!! It’s preposterous!

I agree, there should be that rule of thumb of under a year they could collect, but only because they’ll be trying to find a new job! What is it now, 8 months of a buffer? Maybe we shouldn’t have unemployment at all!

I was employed in MA and live in RI. I will have exhausted my Tier II benefits on 6/20. I am not eligible for Tier III or further because my benefits won’t expire by 5/29/10. I’ve put out 280 resume’s and worked for more than 30 years of my life. I’m 55. Are you kidding me? My husband’s hours were cut 9 mos. ago and we face losing our home. We’re citizens, taxpayers and hard working Americans. I can’t believe that we could become homeless soon. We have gone through all of our savings to keep our home and now that may be for naught. Our home value has dropped by a whopping $120k since 2007. Our son is serving our Country in the Navy too. Where’s the help for those of us who were born here and worked here all of our lives? I can’t live on $10. per hour, can you?
We’ve both paid into unemployment for over 30 years and this is the first time we’ve ever collected. If it weren’t for unemployment, we would be waiting in a food line right now. Employers are not hiring people age (55+) to grow with their companies any longer. While this is discrimination, there is no way to prove it’s occurring but after 280 resume’s, I would bet on it.
