Today, the S&P/Case Shiller Home Price Index was released for January (index is calculated every month and has a two-month lag). The 20-area index real estate home sale prices report showed declines in 18 of the major metro areas, with just San Diego and Washington, D.C. showing home prices increases.

Home prices in San Diego showed a tiny 0.1 percent increase and Washington, D.C. homes increased 3.6 percent.

David Blitzer, the chairman of S&P’s index committee said: “The housing market recession is not yet over, and none of the statistics are indicating any form of sustained recovery.” Mr Blitzer also said: “At most, we have seen all statistics bounce along their troughs; at worst, the feared double-dip recession may be materializing.”

Whatever potential recovery in house prices are now going to be totally wiped out in the event of a government shutdown. It’s like taking one tiny step forward and two massive steps back.
