Future of California Housing

Future of California Housing – An affordable housing solution

Container Homes could be the answer to California’s affordable home crisis.

Container homes are exactly what they sound like; homes made from the steel shipping containers that you see carrying goods everywhere on trains, trucks, and ships. … Besides trendiness, interest in container homes is also part of a wider interest in saving money with prefabricated and modular homes.

Shipping containers homes can be built quite cheaply, perhaps even cheaper than an equivalent home of traditional construction techniques. … A shipping container home built using two 40-foot steel shipping containers can provide more than 600 square feet of living space and cost around $35,000.

Naturally, you’ll still need the land or lot to place your shipping container on. Here in California, with the land values very high, it still going to be more expensive to construct a shipping container home on your own piece of land, then perhaps any other state.

You should consider though, that the total cost of a shipping container home with the same size lot, and similar square footage for the living space will be about half the cost of a conventionally built home.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Shipping containers are designed to be stacked in high columns, carrying heavy loads. They are also designed to resist harsh environments, such as on ocean-going vessels or sprayed with road salt while transported on roads. Due to their high strength, shipping containers are usually the last to fall in extreme weather, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and tsunamis.
Modular
All shipping containers are the same width and most have two standard height and length measurements and as such they provide modular elements that can be combined into larger structures. This simplifies design, planning and transport. As they are already designed to interlock for ease of mobility during transportation, structural construction is completed by simply emplacing them. Due to the containers’ modular design, additional construction is as easy as stacking more containers. They can be stacked up to 12 units high when empty.
