San Diego ZooA dynamic individual started the San Diego Zoo in 1916 by the name of Dr. Harry Wegeforth. This San Diego physician started the Zoo with approximately fifty animals. Today, the San Diego Zoo cares for a variety of over 3,500 animals from 800 different species. Not only does the Zoo have an extensive animal collection, the Zoo has a plant collection of over 6,500 species. It is acknowledged as one of the finest Zoos in the world. The San Diego Zoo is known for its natural exhibits, which are able to closely simulate life in the wild. This includes having flowing streams and native foliage in the exhibits. This is beneficial for the well-being of the animals and provides a stimulating and educational forum for visitors to view the animals. The Zoo has opened several new natural habitats in recent years: Tiger River, Sun Bear Forest, Scripps Aviary, and Gorilla Tropics, Pygmy Chimpanzees, Raptors, and Australasian Birds.
